Hey-oh! Greetings from LaLa land!
« on: Jun 22, 2010, 01:37 pm »
Hello!

I'm Shannon - a long time stalker of this board, just getting into actively posting and participating!

I am a budding stage manager, but have been involved with theater for most of my life. I do most of my work with my theater company - Rogue Artists Ensemble. We're an iterant company with no real home, but all of our productions go up in Los Angeles. We call our work "hyper-theater" - we blend traditional theater techniques like mask and puppet work with modern technologies like intense video and sound design.  The show we're working on right now may possibly have a mask that has speakers for eyes controlled by the performer with an iPhone. Stuff like that!

I'm also entering an MFA program for Stage Management in the fall.

Also, I like to crochet, yoga and generally kick ass. :)

Hooray for Stage Managers!

belated 1000 welcomes.
your company sounds like it is focussed in intriguing areas. i just produced a show that audience entirely self navigate through iphones using ugmented reality technology - but it doesnt happen in a theatre like your work does!
tell us more!
Cheers

Gladly!

The Rogues do all original work (so far). Our specialty is life-sized puppets and incorporating technology into onstage work, but we also do extensive mask work, shadow-puppetry, movement based theater, etc. The Ensemble (core decision making group) is made up almost entirely of designers, with a couple of performers thrown in the mix, so production value is very important to us.

Our mantra is if you can think it up, we can make it happen onstage. Some of the most interesting things that I think we've made happen are a giant 8ft tall operatable crocodile head (complete with subwoofers under the audience for when it roared), a flower that grows on its own onstage that is accompanied by flower smell being pumped into the audience, and an entire chase scene where the performers are pushed on hand-operated rolling carts.

Next year is our 10th anniversary and we’re going to do Pinnochio. It should be really fun! We’ve also got a show about origins going up this fall at the Inside the Ford space.
I think we're doing some of the most interesting theater in LA - but of course I'm biased. :)

If you’re interested in checking out what we’re up do, we try to keep our website fairly updated.

This site is so helpful and such an awesome resource! Thanks for helping to keep it  going!

Welcome!

I may have missed this in your posts, but where are you going to graduate school? I currently attend Rutgers University and will be going into my 2nd year this fall.

Best,
Amie

AmieBaj - I'm going to be starting at UC Irvine in the fall (I actually did my undergrad there in English). How do you like Rutgers?

Oh, I hear good things about that program.

Rutgers program is wonderful and competitive.  It has the typical pros and cons, as all program do, but it's the right fit for me.  I started SMing in my program right off the bat and it's very thorough.

Enjoy your program!
